Initiation to the cause

How do we tackle negativity around disability?

Blow it up with fun of course 😏.

December 3rd is International Day of People with Disability, so we think the preceding Friday is a great day to dress as a pirate and have a parley (a discussion between opposing sides to discuss a truce) to spread awareness.

The more people are aware of the intentional and unintentional prejudice that exists towards people living with disability, the greater our knowledge grows. The more knowledge we have, the greater chance we have to adapt and improve.

Pirates are interesting role models…

What do you see when you see a picture of a pirate? If you’re like most people, you don’t see the missing limbs, the eye patches, the hooks for hands, you just see a pirate. Wouldn’t it be nice if that’s how we all saw people living with a disability, as just a person living?

You see pirates would be considered “disabled” by today’s standards, but they weren’t excluded from work opportunities, they weren’t stared at, or ignored, or praised for doing simple tasks. They were just pirates getting on with living their pirate lives.

That’s what Pirate Day is all about - Stop seeing the disability and start seeing the person and their abilities.

So let’s get everybody to dress as pirates and just be pirates for a day. Let’s raise awareness about our prejudices and some money to invest in worthwhile projects that let other pirates be more pirate-y.

We are challenging everybody to take a day out of their routine to help raise awareness around the disability sector. Come to work or school, stay home or go to the gym, but

…dress as a Pirate for a day on 1st December.

Help others to start seeing the pirate and not the disability, to see some of the capabilities and skills that most pirates have; a sense of adventure, an ability to work in a team, to not be bound by convention, to be fun, fun-loving and up for anything (or nothing, because that’s how pirates roll).
